After a rewarding working relationship on 1001 Albums . . ., Rob Dimery invited me to co-edit this book. Every element – from the shortlist of subjects to the copy itself – had to be painstakingly negotiated with the US publisher; a valuable learning experience. The book also afforded me the opportunity to research artists with whose history I was unfamiliar; such as Nina Simone, left.
